Associated Centers

The Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center is the focal point for the University’s many and varied international activities and interests. It serves as Howard’s point of contact for a range of inquiries from entities outside the University: foreign embassies, governments, universities and corporations, as well as U.S. government agencies. As lecturers, the Center hosts heads of state and government; Cabinet officers; and a broad range of scholars and officials involved in international affairs.

The mission of the Center is to be a catalyst for enhancing international engagement for the benefit of the HU community. In doing so, the Center integrates global perspectives into the HU experience, promotes education abroad, facilitates deeper scholarship on global issues, supports cross-cultural dialogue and respect for cultural diversity, and prepares leaders who can find solutions to global problems.

Dr. Bunche was one of the founding members of the Department of Government (later Department of Political Science) at Howard. He was the first African American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Ronald W. Walters Leadership and Public Policy Center provides research, consultations, training, and produces public events in areas involving the engagement of African Americans in the U.S. political process. The Center is interdisciplinary and continues the scholarship and activism Dr. Walters, who research and mentorship informed generations of students and political leaders.

Dr. Walters provided strategic direction and thinking in the political and civic arenas and was a prolific writer and political commentator. Dr. Walters served on the political science faculty at Howard for 26 years.

The Center for Women, Gender, and Global Leadership provides support for Black women, resources on gender issues, feminist activism, and transformational leadership while assisting the Howard community with global engagement, research, service learning, and impactful partnerships. 

The Center oversees the newly created minor in Women, Gender, and Sexualities Studies, housed within the College of Arts and Sciences' Interdisciplinary Studies Program (IDSP).
